Project: VicTrack – Malmsbury Station Fire Damage Rectification

Malmsbury Station's Heritage Building Restored Following Fire Damage

VicTrack required the rectification and conservation of the Malmsbury Railway Station Building following fire damage caused by vandalism in January 2024.

The project focused on restoring the internal components of the heritage-listed station building to its conserved state, ensuring its continued preservation for future generations.

GRA Networks has been awarded with the contract to refurbish this building as per client’s requirements.

The early project stage included coordination with Heritage Victoria to ensure compliance with permit conditions, including the marking and documentation of reconstructed elements. Materials analysis was conducted to determine appropriate plaster compositions and timber treatments. The scope also included planning for electrical upgrades and integration of heritage-sensitive repair methods.

Scope of Works at construction stage:

The works delivery phase encompassed a wide range of internal restoration and repair activities, including:

  • Demolition and Removal: Removal of fire-damaged switchboards, cabling, plaster, and timber elements.
  • Structural Repairs: Restoration of timber soffits, bargeboards, ceiling structures, and sub-floor framing per engineering recommendations.
  • Electrical Works: Installation of new 3-phase power supply, switchboards, lighting, GPOs, and RCBOs for both the station building and adjacent residential home.
  • Room-Specific Restoration:
    • Room 1 (Former Booking Office): Replacement and repair of timber ceiling lining, cornices, skirtings, doors, windows, and plaster surfaces.
    • Room 2 & 3 (Waiting Rooms): Replastering of damaged walls and ceilings, reglazing, and door restoration.
  • Heritage Conservation: Salvaging and consolidating original timber fittings, doors, and windows. Reconstructed elements were permanently marked per Heritage Victoria requirements.
  • Joinery and Finishes: Restoration of timber flooring, installation of new trims, and repainting of internal surfaces.
  • Safety and Compliance: All works were carried out in accordance with Australian Standards, VicTrack safety policies, and heritage conservation guidelines.

GRA Networks has successfully delivered the project with a focus on heritage sensitivity, structural integrity, and compliance with conservation standards. The project is completed in alignment with GRA Networks and VicTrack’s program and safety expectations.
