Yarra Trams – Brunswick Depot Substation – MTM Fence And Gate Construction Works

The Traction Power Substation Design & Construction Project (Project) is a Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and Yarra Trams led project to ensure sufficient power within the Tram traction power network to provide for new trams and Melbourne’s future needs. The Brunswick Tram Depot Substation portion of the Project comprises the design and construction of a new traction substation and associated feeder cables to the first point of connection to the existing traction power supply infrastructure at Brunswick Tram Depot (Substation).

The Substation is to be constructed in consultation with MTM and the Department of Transport and Planning on what is currently the MTM rail corridor (Upfield Railway Line). Yarra Trams is seeking the services of a suitably resourced, qualified and experienced civil contractor (Contractor) to carry out certain agreed works within the Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) rail corridor on Cameron Street, Brunswick.

Project Scope & Highlights:

Global Rail Australia is responsible for:

  • Developing and submitting the Site Safety Management Plan (including any ALBF works, TFPC
  • requirements, and MTM permits).
  • Preparing the Construction Methodology Plan for Yarra Trams review and approval.
  • Formulating the MTM Site Access Plan, Risk Register, and SWMS Register.
  • Setting up a draft Traffic Management Plan and securing all necessary MOAs from respective authorities.
  • Verifying the location and extent of underground assets and conduits on site via Non-Destructive Digging (NDD) prior to commencement.

Works Delivery Phase

The scope of construction works includes:

  • Relocation of MTM Type 3 Gate on Cameron Street approximately 44 metres to the south of the existing location (as per MLD_C1417).
  • Installation of new permanent chain link security fence (as per MLD_C1415, MLD_C1417 & MLD_C1418).
  • Removal of Type 1 fence between old and new gate location along the shared user path on Cameron St.
  • Provision of a geotechnical engineer on site (as per MLD_C1415).
  • Trenching, boring, and electrical termination works including the removal of asset 5A/1 (as per MLD_C1416).
  • Management, classification, and disposal of all waste material in accordance with EPA requirements.
  • Reinstatement of road, track, and pavement assets disturbed during works as per relevant authorities’ requirements.
  • Supplying compiled and verified as-built documentation within 4 weeks of Practical Completion.

All works were delivered in accordance with Yarra Trams & Metro’s Safety, Environment, Risk and Quality (SERQ) requirements, with a strong emphasis on compliance, safety, and operational functionality.
